La Chatte Gitane (or The Gypsy Cat) was the name we chose for our cottage in France at the time. We chose it while on the road, moving house the first time round, from Ireland to France with 2 dogs and 7 cats in the car.
This blog began its insignificant life as a recipe book for friends and family who would ask me repeatedly for a recipe of this, that and the other.
Since then it has taken many different directions, like we did and like gypsies tend to do. Sometimes making a U-turn and revisiting familiar roads and taking a break when necessary.
You'll find recipes here, but also musings about the places we've called home, the gardens that we've established, not always successfully, the homes we've improved and the environments we've lived in. Currently, after yet another stint in Ireland, we're back in France @ Le Mas d'Ayen

Scrub, Scrub, Scrub,

Scrub the path around the house. That's what I did yesterday, before someone does any real damage, like breaking a leg or an ankle.

After. Yes, I know it doesn't look like new, but when you see the next photo...

...you'll definitely notice the difference. Lack of sunshine, plenty of damp (wet) weather is the optimum condition for growing a slippery layer of green mess, or moss. Or is it algae.

I also gathered up all the pots by the front door and placed them around the corner out of the wind.

The front door, after.Tidy. My mum will be proud.

The back door, which isn't at the back at all. It's the servants' entrance. For me, so.

Glad that's out of the way. It has been niggling me for a while.

  1. That looks better, I get niggled about things like that, and like you say it can be dangerous.

    1. I've got plenty of niggles and not enough get-up-and-go. But this HAD to be done. Wouldn't want the postman to have an accident. x

  2. oh I appreciate how much hard work it is, and how it does bug you until it's cleaned. I have a similar problem, mainly where the drips fall form the roof above our front door. And it does go green, and it is slippery. So yes, has to be done. In Summer my husband used a power washer and cleaned all the path, it looked so nice. Now it's back to dirty and gunky, so no doubt I'll be out there with some hot water and a brush. If I don't use a little bleach, I use washing detergent, it does a pretty good job and smells nice!

Your front door looks utterly charming. I love it. x

  3. Muscles that I couldn't remember I had were achy.
I use eco-friendly cleaner (Ecover or Frosch) with an added dash of vinegar. The vinegar doesn't smell too nice, I admit. ;-)
