La Chatte Gitane (or The Gypsy Cat) was the name we chose for our cottage in France at the time. We chose it while on the road, moving house the first time round, from Ireland to France with 2 dogs and 7 cats in the car.
This blog began its insignificant life as a recipe book for friends and family who would ask me repeatedly for a recipe of this, that and the other.
Since then it has taken many different directions, like we did and like gypsies tend to do. Sometimes making a U-turn and revisiting familiar roads and taking a break when necessary.
You'll find recipes here, but also musings about the places we've called home, the gardens that we've established, not always successfully, the homes we've improved and the environments we've lived in. Currently, after yet another stint in Ireland, we're back in France @ Le Mas d'Ayen

In. Out.

All I seem to be doing all day, every day is opening doors for dogs. And for cats.
With the dogs it's like this. I come to the kitchen, sit my bum on a chair at the table. Dog, usually Millie, comes to kitchen from sitting room (where she has been napping on the couch). She stands at the door, I get up and let her out. I wait at the door. Any second now she will bark. Other dog, Blackie (we didn't name him) comes running from sitting room (where he has been napping on other couch). "I wanna go out ! I wanna go out ! There is something I need to see and bark at too ! "
It's okay, I'm still there, I can open the door, like a doorman at a fancy hotel.

"Oh, man ! There is nothing to see here ! Can you let me back in ? "
Sometimes he waits till my bum hits the chair again. Blackie comes back in, Millie not. She'll wait another minute and then I see her head sticking out over the door panel, looking in through the window. Indignant. "Oi ! I'm waiting !"
Often, she will just stand there, gazing in the distance, letting a bark escape. And there is Blackie !  "Out, out out !"  And on automatic pilot, I open the door once more.
Can't wait for spring and summer to arrive, when the door is open the whole bloody day, weather or no weather.

The cats. Well... they are always on the wrong side of any door in the house, aren't they ?
Oh, they do have a couple of cat doors, but why use them when there is someone around to do all the work for you ?

It is my fault. I did this. I haven't brought them up properly. And they take me for a ride !

Have a good weekend, dears.

    1. We used to have 8 cats at one time. But we've been cutting down, haha ! If one passes, it won't be replaced until we get to two.

    1. Millie ONLY barks when she's outside at god-knows-what. And only once or twice. I think it's just to get Blackie of the couch, for him to discover there is absolutely nothing of interest.
And indeed, they don't 'ask' to go out. They just stand there gazing through the glazed door.

  6. Thank goodness Ginger uses the cat flap, the only time he comes through the door is if he sees all the dogs coming in or out of it then he will stand waiting to be let in.

The dogs just sit on the tops of the sofas to watch the world go by thank goodness and only venture out occasionally when nature calls.
