La Chatte Gitane (or The Gypsy Cat) was the name we chose for our cottage in France at the time. We chose it while on the road, moving house the first time round, from Ireland to France with 2 dogs and 7 cats in the car.
This blog began its insignificant life as a recipe book for friends and family who would ask me repeatedly for a recipe of this, that and the other.
Since then it has taken many different directions, like we did and like gypsies tend to do. Sometimes making a U-turn and revisiting familiar roads and taking a break when necessary.
You'll find recipes here, but also musings about the places we've called home, the gardens that we've established, not always successfully, the homes we've improved and the environments we've lived in. Currently, after yet another stint in Ireland, we're back in France @ Le Mas d'Ayen

Our three times daily visit to the pigs.

And the times in between, just for a chat and a rub behind the ears.

No kissy on the nose for you, you mucky girls.

That dirt mound used to be higher than this.

If you look closely you'll see they have dug themselves a few holes, just for sunbathing in. They will choose a certain spot depending on the position of the sun.  If it rains they prefer the indoors obviously.

They are getting too fat, I guess. We'll have to use a lot of lard in that case. Harumph.

I always get a bit panicky when our animals don't act the way I expect them too and I told Bert that she was in a seemingly uncomfortable stance there, with an odd look on her face. All was well after she did a number two.

I can be such a stress chicken (literally translated from Dutch) sometimes.

  1. Pigs they just eat up your time as well as your scraps don't they .... but usually in a good way.

We had so many adventures with ours and spent far too much time standing at the fence watching their antics in between feeding them. and all the usual chores. They are just such clever and entertaining animals, soon we will be back in business and I guess I will fall in love all over again.

I'm guessing yours are Tamworths or a Tamworth cross so they will be very lively, ours in the past were Middle Whites and Large Blacks and we've decided that Large Blacks are what we will go for again. Although my heart lies with the Middle Whites they are not as suited to living in our woodland as the Large Blacks will be, and of course both these breeds are really laid back pigs, whereas our Kune Kunes were always up to mischief :-)

It's lovely to see your pigs living such a good life.

    1. The standing at the fence bit is totally true. I recently suggested to Bert that we place a bench there, like we did outside the chicken coop.
These are indeed a Tamworth cross. The sellers told me the father to be a Duroc, but when I saw him he looked, to me, more like an Oxford Sandy and Black.
And yes, they are very lively. Except in the mornings....
