La Chatte Gitane (or The Gypsy Cat) was the name we chose for our cottage in France at the time. We chose it while on the road, moving house the first time round, from Ireland to France with 2 dogs and 7 cats in the car.
This blog began its insignificant life as a recipe book for friends and family who would ask me repeatedly for a recipe of this, that and the other.
Since then it has taken many different directions, like we did and like gypsies tend to do. Sometimes making a U-turn and revisiting familiar roads and taking a break when necessary.
You'll find recipes here, but also musings about the places we've called home, the gardens that we've established, not always successfully, the homes we've improved and the environments we've lived in. Currently, after yet another stint in Ireland, we're back in France @ Le Mas d'Ayen

Laundry Room Makeover

It is most likely a room that not many people get overly excited about, for me it was a long awaited project.
The Laundry Room.

The room where we plonked our washing machine and tumble dryer in more than 2 years ago, got an overhaul. And boy, was it time.
It used to be an en-suite bathroom to a downstairs bedroom. That particular bedroom, became Bert's office as soon as we moved in and he worked in there for, yes, almost 2 years. I shared his space with a corner for my crafts and it got out of hand very quickly. But that's another story, for another time.
Manoeuvring through 'the office' with baskets and piles of laundry was not my idea of fun. I suspect it wasn't Bert's idea of fun either.
After getting through and almost into 'the laundry room' there was another obstacle to challenge me. A washbasin that was positioned so close to the door, that you had a hard time passing through the doorway even without a laundry basket.

I'm not proud of the dump that was the 'laundry room' and to show you the photos of the before - I must be insane -  but there it is, warts and all.
The tumble dryer's vent had to be guided out of the once outside window.  I said once, because with all the other works that have been going on here, it now leads into the kitchen. Guiding the vent trough more appropriate routes to the outside was going to cost us an arm and leg, so we opted to buy a brand spanking new condenser dryer.

An Ikea Billy bookcase served what purpose exactly ?

With summer approaching and knowing that a season of lots of laundry would commence, I put my foot down.  I wanted an easy maintainable laundry room, albeit of bijoux proportions.
Looking on the internet to find kitchen cabinets or any cabinets in the area, didn't deliver any results.
That's when Bert decided one Thursday afternoon last April that he would drive to Ikea in Dublin the next day. It is only a 5 hour drive single journey, anyway...
And he did just that !

That weekend we had the whole, or near enough, laundry room makeover-ed.

We had considered to remove the WC, but then decided against it. One can never have too many of them. Haha !

Yes, the washbasin was still there during the coming weeks, but we've sorted that too as soon as we could get the plumber in.

The cabinets are used for storing the linen that I use in our holiday let in the village. Keeping it fresh and dust free.

My new sink.

The scars of the other one still visible.

I'm happy. I can keep it reasonably tidy and organised. Most of the time...

  2. How organized you are. I will not show you photos of my laundry room. Just believe me when I say it's far worse than your old one. :-o
