La Chatte Gitane (or The Gypsy Cat) was the name we chose for our cottage in France at the time. We chose it while on the road, moving house the first time round, from Ireland to France with 2 dogs and 7 cats in the car.
This blog began its insignificant life as a recipe book for friends and family who would ask me repeatedly for a recipe of this, that and the other.
Since then it has taken many different directions, like we did and like gypsies tend to do. Sometimes making a U-turn and revisiting familiar roads and taking a break when necessary.
You'll find recipes here, but also musings about the places we've called home, the gardens that we've established, not always successfully, the homes we've improved and the environments we've lived in. Currently, after yet another stint in Ireland, we're back in France @ Le Mas d'Ayen

One Vista, Many Moods - Part Two

There you go. That wasn't too long between posts eh ?  Part one of this photo reportage is to be found here .

I will start off with the last picture of part one as I particularly like it. Rainbow, so dramatic.

It might look as if there are no tides here because I take photos more often when it is high tide. Understandably it looks more pretty then. Of course I am not going to withhold you the view at low tide. That would be cheating you. Here it is...

Really not so impressive now, is it ?

And then we have spring tide when almost our whole peninsula disappears under water. According to Bert there is about 3 meters difference between low and high tide. For now, I'll have to take his word for it.

During the spring and summer months there was regular activity on the water with kayaks, dingies, our very own Sneem Rowing Club training....

Dingy- man (aka Bert)

And here's what happens when you come back at low tide.

The motorized kayaks that seem to be a hit with hotel guests - not so much with myself as they are just too noisy and spoil the serenity of this place.

A few locals we see passing by every now and then.  Coming back from fishing or just from a spot of leisurely enjoying the bay and all the beauty it has to offer.

Our lovely neighbour, Richard who's boat we envy very much.

Sneem Rowing Club training.

And this is a boat that belongs to us and isn't going anywhere in a hurry...

It's the end of September and there is hardly any human activity on the water now, so we now can enjoy some of the wildlife that's around.

As late afternoon/evening approaches the light on the landscape changes dramatically.

The perfect closing to this article.  The end of a day, beginning of night. Magical moonlight.

Thank you for visiting.

One Vista, Many Moods - Part One

I have been meaning to post this sooner, but you know how it goes, there is always something getting in the way of me updating the blog.  There I was, thinking I would have all the time in the world, when we moved here in April, to write blog post after blog post...  As yet it hasn't happened, but hopefully somewhere in the near future it just might.
For the time being, here is one of my sporadic contributions.

What a privilege it is to live here. This is a most beautiful spot to call home and my camera has been busy, trying to capture the so many different moods this place has to offer.
Now I have to tell you I just do click click click with my camera and I have no interest in photography, the technology/artistry behind it. I don't use photoshop or any other malarkey to enhance the pictures.  They are simple, unadulterated photos taken by a numpty.

We'll start off with the morning glory section.
Ok, these 2 where taken before we lived here. It was actually mid February on a visit.  Early morning sunrise in winter.

The next morning was a totally different mood as the mist was heavy and thick.

Early morning in April with the water surface like a mirror.

July morning.

And then today's dramatic mood.

Other pictures from daytime moods in the bay.

April

Summer

 Ominous skies

I call it the dinosaur mountain. Photos taken only about 10 minutes apart.

A wonderful sun harp
.

Nothing quite encompasses Ireland like a good few rainbows.

That's it for part one.  Part two will follow soon. Who knows, maybe tomorrow. ;-)
Hope you enjoy our vista (almost) as much as we do.

Summer Air is Cooling Off....

...and the autumnal feel is starting to tighten its grip on Sneem.  While there are still tourists around, it's nothing compared to the height of the season.  Everything is calming down while we are holding on to the last rays of sunshine.

I cannot believe that we've been here for four and a half months already ! AND, I've been neglecting this here blog, big time !
It has been a busy old summer with visitors from Belgium coming and going.

My mum stayed with us for a month, accompanied by my 6 y/o nephew, Mathias.  It was delightful and they had a jolly good time.
Out on the water with Uncle Bert

 The daily chores

Pretty woman !

After they'd been here 2 weeks, my brother and the rest of his family arrived.  The weather had been fantastic and all kinds of outdoor activities were on the menu.
From swimming in the ice cold pond...

....looking for shells...
...to walking along the coast.

Very sad to see them return to Belgium, but I know they will be back regularly.

After that we had to welcome a second cousin of mine and her 10 y/o daughter for a week.  Bringing them back to Cork Airport and picking up friends at the same time....

You see, we had a busy old summer.

It was a sad day when our beautiful Sam died.

He had been poorly since October last year (possibly a brain tumor) and while we could keep him content and comfortable most of the time with the aid of cortisone, the last two weeks where a bit of a struggle. We asked the vet to come and set him free.  Very sad.  We knew it was inevitable, but we take strength from the fact that he was able to move house and country with us. AND, that he had 2 gloriously happy months here.

Ending this post on a more positive note.
The planning permission for our house extension IS IN !  After the initial hiccup (read about it here ) everything went smoothly.
Our architect is now working on the plans for the builders before he sends requests for quotes.  Quotes that will be well above our budget, no doubt (I can already imagine Bert building up steam in his head, ready to explode).  We'll tackle our problems as they come and try to find solutions that won't break the bank ( and that will release some of the steam from Bert's head ;) )

This Monday I'll be going to Belgium for 5 days and I'll be staying with my mum. Gosh, I could do with the rest....

Thank you for reading.
